I know the creative talents of street artists have influenced my upbringing, as well as many others. Street art is an effective way of up lifting our communities. Especially in cases of abandoned homes, or old warehouse buildings such as 5Ptz, located in Long Island City, it draws attention to the structure as “potential” not as something to be feared of hated.

Instead street art has not only contributed to the identity of many neighborhoods, such as DUMBO’s Water Street Mural. Its has also created a voice, not only for the artists who contribute to their neighborhoods but the people who surround it, like Williamsburg and the Lower East Side of New York.

Street art allows us to view things differently, the artist invites us to look beyond the “structure” of what is there and see the possibilities of what it- what we- can be. – epitomizing the reality that change is natural, and can be made without losing a sense of identity of who we are.  It is a powerful message that relates to the thriving community in our boroughs, and reminds us to challenge ourselves to be open to evolution, but to never forget the structures of our being.

The following mural was created by LNY & Sean 9 Lugo.  Both artist collaborated on this wall- in addition to their art show tonight.    When I asked Sean 9 Lugo how it felt working on the wall - his response – “I’ve worked on walls before, thought it was easy (pause) .. but this s#it was hard!” lol

TONIGHT 58 Gallery is presenting “Night Drawing” New Work and Installations by Sean 9 Lugo and LNY

Inspired by the grit of his past and present, Sean 9 Lugo creates reflections of himself into smooth portraits of realistic genius. His work mixes fine colored pencil images set against subtle hints of color and “street art” element backgrounds – layers sanded down into his own many layers. The imagery comes directly from those who have inspired him in his progressions of art, from nine year old doodles, to the streets, and finally to wanting to rise above with his savage colored pencil work. This set of work truly breaks down Sean 9 Lugo’s techniques in collage work, layering, and understanding where to direct the eye.

LNY’s work is based on the idea of drawing as thinking, drawing as a research tool and drawing as a slow means of understanding. His intricately executed portraits of common, marginalized and forgotten people explore the agency and meaning of representation in the public domain, which is why his work can be found on murals or wheat-pasted to walls across Europe, Asia and the Americas. For this exhibition the New Jersey based artist will feature new and recent portrait work that continues to explore these themes as well as an installation focusing on Camila Vallejo, the new face of South American Communism and the leader of the recent populist uprising in Chile.

Join us on Nov 4th from 7-11pm to celebrate the opening of this exhibition.

“Night Drawing” will run from Nov 4th – 27th.
